Time to Crow About Our Boys Coaches

Boys Coaches at Sum It Up Lacrosse Camps and ClinicsIt’s the time of year that I start to boast about how great our staff at Swax Lax Lacrosse is. The college lacrosse season has started, the high school teams have begun practice, and people are starting to get outside again. Don’t be fooled. This is not just an old man bragging about his kids — it’s also a sales pitch regarding the quality of the boys coaches at Swax Lax Lacrosse.

Last week one of our coaches scored the winning goal for Richmond University against Duke University, as a freshman. That is a huge upset. Think 1980 USA Hockey type upset. Teddy Hatfield is also a former player of mine so I was walking around with my chest puffed out telling anyone who would listen to me all about it. But this success is not all that unusual for our Swax Lax Lacrosse staff.

Boasting About the Boys Coaches

Another long-time staffer, Jules Heningburg, is leading a renaissance of the lacrosse program at Rutgers. They are 5-0 and Jules is averaging more than 3 points a game. Last year Alex Slazar won the Division III National Championship with Tufts University. Dan Winschuh is playing defense for Princeton University. Christian Hedengren is playing for the United States Air Force Academy. We also have coaches playing at Colgate, St John’s, Michigan, St Joseph’s, and Marist.

Some of our coaches are not playing lacrosse in college, instead focusing on the academic side. Dan Childers is studying Pre Med at Notre Dame. Patrick Galvin is studying business at Michigan. Some of our coaches are getting it done off the field and out of the classroom too. Brian Heyl is a volunteer fireman in New Vernon when he is not playing for Chatham High School. Harris Johnson is a Red Cross blood drive captain at Morristown-Beard.

One of our adult staffers, whose son is a Swax Lax Lacrosse camper, described our boys’ staff as “the young men you want your child to become.” I agree. I think we have a great staff, and I am very proud of these young men. It seems like a good time to crow about them.

And, the good news is our coaches for the girls are just as strong and worthy of crowing about. Stay tuned for that side of the story!
